Sunscreen Product
When you’re pounding down the road, thinking about which sunscreen product to use is probably one of the last things on your mind. But, for motorcyclists, choosing an effective sun protection product can be crucial to your riding enjoyment. As Bikers, we’re exposed to the elements for long periods of time, and often spend entire days exposed to the sun as we ride on gorgeous spring and summer days. To avoid sunburn and potentially even skin cancer, it’s thus imperative that we protect ourselves from the sun’s UV Rays.
Choosing the Best Sunscreen
With so many sunscreens and sun block products on the market, it can be difficult to choose which is best. Sunscreen products all have different characteristics, so it’s best to try several brands and decide for yourself which works the best. Bikers have special needs which should be considered when seeking a sunscreen to purchase. Some things to keep in mind:
Choose a sunscreen that is light and non-greasy. You don’t want your hands to be sliding around your handlebars, and you want something that will absorb into the skin quickly.
Choose a sunscreen that comes in a compact, easy-to-carry package. Your bike has limited space, and you definitely want to keep your sunscreen with you at all times. Remember, weather changes quickly, and a cloudy, overcast day can turn sunny and bright.
Don’t be afraid to reapply the sunscreen throughout the day, especially if you sweat a lot while you ride.
Not all sunscreens are waterproof. Waterproof sunscreens generally will provide you with 80 minutes of protection in the water. Water resistant sunscreens will generally provide you with about 40 minutes of protection in the water
Apply the sunscreen product liberally to your arms, the back of your neck, and your scalp. For Bikers, these are the areas where you’re most likely to burn.
The best sunscreen products for Bikers should be comfortable to wear and should absorb into the skin quickly so you have instant protection once you start riding. Also, try to find a sunscreen that’s moisturizer-based so that your skin remains soft and smooth.
SPF 30: What it Means
When most people think of sunscreens, they think of SPF ratings. On store shelves, you may see SPF 15, SPF 30 and SPF 45 products. But what does this mean? SPF stands for “sun protection factor”. Basically, the SPF number is a measure of how long you can stay exposed to the sun without your skin turning red. If, for example, your skin starts to burn after being exposed to the sun for 20 minutes, and SPF 30 product will extend your burn time by 30x. SPF ratings are not perfect, and it’s important to remember that using a product with a high SPF rating is not alone sufficient for protecting yourself from the sun’s UV rays. Also, keep in mind that the higher the SPF rating, the lower your chances of developing a rich, deep, healthy-looking tan, so don’t use the SPF number as your sole criteria for choosing a sun protection product. Most people tend to keep SPF sunscreen tubes from one season to the next, but it’s important to realize that products with SPF have active ingredients in them, and after a year, those active ingredients may no longer work. So, don’t be afraid to buy a new tube of sunscreen after each season. The protection is well worth the small price.
